According to the president of the Bowie High School Alumni Association in 1977 and 1981, the association began in 1937, but went inactive for 30 years. In 1967, the association worked to assure that Bowie could still wear it's name. Many thought that Bowie should pick up a new name, but According to the book La Bowie by alumnus Elman Chapa, petitions went out and signatures were collected. An alumni chapter in California even contributes 264 signatures. In the end Bowie kept it's name the same.
The alumni were unsuccessful in saving the original Bowie building, however, alumnus Rosa Rangel, 1956 graduate, six time Alumni Association President, and self-appointed Bowie High and Alumni Association historian, stood outside the Sun Bowl and personally collected hundreds of signatures herself. The petition had insufficient amounts of signatures we hand-delivered to their attorney in Austin, but the building was demolished in 1988.
The Bowie Alumni Association is dedicated to help current Bowie Bears fulfill their dreams and continuing their education through special scholarship programs. Anywhere from 12-15 scholarships are given out each year and most of which come from endowments. One of the endowments are from former teacher Margaret Dixon, others are from alumni such as; Harry Drinis, Elsa Lightbourn, Arturo Lightbourn, Socorro Lozano Kastrin, and Carmen Contreras Peña. Desert Eagle also provides a yearly donation to the scholarship funds. The association hosts events such as the Hawaiian Luau Dance and October's Homecoming, throughout the year to raise money for scholarships.
